Sea Change by Aimee Friedman

Sixteen-year-old Miranda Merchant is great at science. . .and not so great with boys. After major drama with her boyfriend and (now ex) best friend, she's happy to spend the summer on small, mysterious Selkie Island, helping her mother sort out her late grandmother's estate.

There, Miranda finds new friends and an island with a mysterious, mystical history, presenting her with facts her logical, scientific mind can't make sense of. She also meets Leo, who challenges everything she thought she knew about boys, friendship. . .and reality.

Ok guys, I think it's about time for me to share one of my personal favorites with you. And boy, is it a romantic one. For all of you gushy, heart-melted, romance intoxicated teen girls like myself, you better be observing

This story is all about Miranda and Miranda's  struggle to find herself and what she really wants in life. This story is also all about Leo *swooning while batting eyelashes*. You can so totally tell that Leo's character was created by a woman because Leo has all the qualities that matter in a guy (a.k.a. looks, brains, charm, humor, tenderness, romantic gestures, etc). The author had to make the perfect guy for her heroin and in a book appealing to girls, she had to make the perfect guy for her audience. She succeeded! Also...mermaids. Did I mention that Leo might be a mermaid/merman? Well you'll see...

In this book you will come face-to-page with some of the sweetest scenes in your romantic reading career. Prepare to turn your daydreams ON! Even though I can't stop going back and reading these great scenes over and over again, this book really isn't meant for everyone. The writing is so different, and the story structure is so awkward, that it's really an required taste. Also Miranda's struggles with herself, mother, and urge to fit in can get kind of pathetic. Some girls have these kinda troubles but not to this extent, so this book is slightly hard to relate to. Another thing is to be prepared to have a relatively disappointing ending. There is no real satisfying ending. Don't get me wrong, I'm still in love with the book, I just had to come up with things that could've been worked on.

Even though it's not summer yet, add this to your summer reading list. There has never been a more perfect book to read at the beach then one about a romance at a beach! Even if all of the book doesn't suit your fancy, you'll be glad you read the priceless parts that Sea Change possesses.    Plot: 4.5/5 stars   Cover 5/5 stars (Probably one of the best covers I've ever witnessed!)    -Katie

  3. If I could be on Selkie Island I would never want summer to end. What a history of sea creatures, heirs and southern hospitality this island has. Magnificent.
