Forgive My Fins by Tera Lynn Childs

Lily Sanderson has a secret, and it's not that she has a huge crush on gorgeous swimming god Brody Bennett, who makes her heart beat flipper-fast. Unrequited love is hard enough when you're a normal teenage girl, but when you're half human, half mermaid, like Lily, there's no such thing as a simple crush.
Lily's mermaid identity is a secret that can't get out, since she's not just any mermaid—she's a Thalassinian princess. When Lily found out three years ago that her mother was actually a human, she finally realized why she didn't feel quite at home in Thalassinia, and she's been living on land and going to Seaview High School ever since, hoping to find where she truly belongs. Sure, land has its problems—like her obnoxious biker-boy neighbor, Quince Fletcher—but it has that one major perk: Brody. The problem is, mermaids aren't really the casual dating type—the instant they "bond," it's for life.  When Lily's attempt to win Brody's love leads to a tsunami-sized case of mistaken identity, she is in for a tidal wave of relationship drama, and she finds out, quick as a tailfin flick, that happily ever after never sails quite as smoothly as you planned.

I'm just gonna come right out and say it.... I love this book!! It is so cute. Not in the puppy/kitten/baby polar bear kinda cute, but the "you are so innocent and stubborn, it's adorable" kinda cute. The main chica, Lily, is a land driven mermaid who has no idea how the world and people work. What's even more suckish is the high school she's in. Lily has to deal with perverted guys, mean girls, lack of friends, and all that jazz. The one upside for her is the major crush she has on the school jock, Brody. Lily is so clouded in human-mermaid bonding mojo that she overlooks the fact that Brody is not such a great person. It takes her a while to figure this out. Quince on the other hand is a great character! He has so many layers underneath his leather jacket and biker boots. He's a pleasure to read about even though he can be a little immature sometimes (Like all boys though).

Even though Lily lacks in the love department, this is a great teen romance. There is some really great romantic scenes that make you melt all the way down to your dorsal fins. It's so adorable! It's also really funny. All of Lily's sea references are so charming and the way she acts in situations is sarcastic and fun to read. Though this book teeters on the edge of teen girl crush stereotypes, I know people who give there all's to people they hardly know. It's almost like a lesson to girls to think before they love. This is the perfect summer read for all girls and I couldn't recommend this book more! It's just so fin-tastic!   Plot: 4.5/5 stars   Cover 4/5 stars    -Katie

  1. I may fantasize about falling in love with a vampire or werewolf, but I dream about being a mermaid. A mermaid princess would be even better, and Lily Sanderson gets to be both.
