Touch of Frost by Jennifer Estep

Gwen is a gypsy. She has a power called psychometry and can find out things about people by touching objects. She had no idea what was in store for her when she picked up a girl's hairbrush. It started a chain reaction that led to her mother's tragic death in a  car accident. Gwen now goes to Mythos Academy where everyone is descended from gods of myth. Gwen has no friends and thinks she just doesn't belong with the pompous warrior kids. But when one of the most popular girls in school is murdered, she becomes tangled up in something that will change her forever. If she thinks gym class is bad, wait until she finds out what destiny awaits her.

Touch of Frost was a fast, fun, and unique read. I loved the theme and spunky characters. It is the first book in the Mythos Academy series.  The author writes about your typical high school drama, but adds in kick butt characters and a daily does of myth! Stir it up, and you get one heck of an epic series.

Gwen goes to Mythos Academy, a boarding school full of rich kids. But not only are they rich, they are descended from gods and have superhuman abilities. I really loved this idea! Mythology is not used nearly enough in young adult literature! Ok, maybe its just me. I am a mythology buff, so it was natural that I was captivated by the story!

Another thing about this book that stand out are the awesome characters. They took a new leap forward and broke out of stereotypical cliches. Gwen is a girl who doesn't want anything to do with Mythos, so she is a bit reclusive. She may seem like an average character at first, but she is brave. In a way, you can say she was the underdog who had no idea what she was capable of. Other characters like the popular, seemingly banal "mean girl" Daphne turned out to be a great and caring friend for Gwen. And Logan, a Spartan who is Gwen's love interest, hints there is so much more to him than what he is labelled as.

The whole book progresses a bit slow. But it did do an excellent job of building itself up to a surprising plot twist. This book is leading up to a great series, and I recommend this book to any myth lover!
